BESS carries out a management system of specific ecological niches literally "pocket beaches" ("spiagge tascabili"), namely small beaches limited by natural headlands that represent a natural response to the climate change effect. They are defense systems that are based on the natural coastal defense features. The projects carries out: - a Territorial information System using a GIS features on all Italian and Maltese PB and for each of them an analisys of the actual situation in terms of anthropic pressure, both urban and touristic. - a surveillance system of all all Italian and Maltese PB through aerial images and shots captured by laser scanner (LIDAR) that will allow to update the terrestrial and submarine map and set up a remote monitoring plan able to release images and data every 15 minutes. Through a color and shaping recognition software, it will be possible to have information on both the morphological and the environmental variation of the PBs. - a coastal management model for PBs: a user manual for public administrations in charge of drawning up the coastal management of the PBs and n. 2 management plans on two sample locations.

Achievements (SQ):

The initial project included the study as well as the survey of 85 pocket beaches of the two islands, namely 70 PB in Sicily and 15 PB in Malta. Subsequently, the analysis of the logistical – objective, technological and scientific offer continuously evolving – suggested some operational changes in the overall implementation of the project while keeping all outputs and/or project indicators unchanged. It was therefore proposed an alternative to the original design approach that envisaged an increase in the number of pocket beaches to be investigated, in fact it has gone from 85 original pocket beaches to 132 pocket beaches, corresponding to 110 knots 95 in Sicily and 15 in Malta) of the Territorial Information System (SIT), because in some nodes are included two or three pocket beaches. The choice to study a higher number of PBs stemmed from having identified other PBs considered interesting both from the morphological point of view and from the biological point of view. All the pocket beaches analysed were identified in Gis environment using a punctual Shapefile reported according to the WGS84 UTM 33N coordinate system. To each PB has been assigned a unique code to ensure the correct correspondence of all the information stored during the project. The code consists of two portions, the first portion refers to the region/state in which the beach falls, followed by a progressive number that identifies one of the 110 nodes within the project. The second portion concerns the province in which the beach falls, followed by another progressive number, independent from the one contained within the first block, which resets every time the province to which it belongs. The numbering contained within the codes begins at the pocket beach Taormina Isola bella, and continues counterclockwise. There are exceptions where the code referring to the node remains unchanged, while the code for the province is increased. In this case, the beaches that have the same initial portion of the code belong to groups, created in order to study in detail the area. The entire Shapefile contains all the territorial information and distinctive features of the beaches, useful for the creation of the cognitive database preparatory to the modelling of the system.
